What is this?
Hello Sno-Jammers,
A bunch of us are planning to go to Mt St Helens, next weekend the 26th. I've spoke to Howard at Lone Fir Resorts which is the motel in Cougar WA, the closest town to the snow park. Their web site can be found here:
http://www.lonefirresort.com/
.
The plan is to drive down Friday night, and ride Saturday. Some people will be driving back after riding Saturday, some may stay for Sunday. We will be riding out of the Marble Mount snow park on Saturday between 8 and 9 am. The WA state parks trail map can be found here:
http://www.parks.wa.gov/winter/trails/mapdownloads/motorized/Marble%20Mountain.pdf
This is not a guided ride in the traditional sense - basically St Helens is a very very large play area - It's about a six mile trail ride down the groomed trail, then you turn left through some trees (think Christmas tree sized) and then you are on the side of the mountain and lahar which are areas where the eruption blew down all the trees. So plan on riding with a buddy who likes doing the same riding you do. Once we are on the lahar, we'll break up into various groups.
If you want to ride over the 4800 foot mark you HAVE to sign up for a climbers permit (free) and you can do that at the Lone Fir Resort, or at the snow park. This is so the FS can keep tabs of who's on the mountain (and who may be overdue). You also have to sign yourself OUT when you leave at the same place where you signed yourself in.
Here's some pictures from the trip Phil, Brian, Don, Don, and myself took in February.
